This past week I had the pleasure of meeting the family that owns and operates Southern Fresh Farms Farmer’s Market here in Fort Myers, Florida.
I had heard great things about the farmer’s market, but was not prepared for what I found. I was thoroughly impressed with my find. This place was an actual farm, not just a market with a bunch of vendors selling fruit and vegetables that they had purchased from brokers. The farm and it’s market are owned and operated by the McMahon family. While there I had the opportunity to meet and talk with Robert McMahon Jr. and his son “Bo” McMahon lll. In the short time that I was there, Bo gave me an abbreviated lesson in the hydroponic concepts that he and his family are using to grow fresh fruits, vegetables, and flowers right here in town. We also discussed how important small family owned farms are to our local economy and the environment. A very informative and fun day of shopping.
It’s not the only farm in town to do so, but for it’s size and the family friendly vibe I couldn’t wait to tell others about it. While at the farm I had the chance to see a small petting zoo, green houses, vertical plantings, a cool covered farmer’s market, small playground for kids, picnic tables, and the fish farm with it’s above ground tanks holding real Florida grown Tilapia. Southern Fresh Farms is an agricultural park also. That’s pretty cool.
Bo took the time to talk about the future of the farm, some of its upcoming events, and educating me on the benefits of hydroponic concept growing compared to regular farming.
