Ray’s take on a whiskey sour

A few nights ago I wanted an old fashion prior to dinner, but quickly realized that I was out of bitters. So I decided to make a change and make my own version of a cocktail using ingredients I had on hand at home. I found that I had meyer lemons, bourbon, and sugar. So my journey began.

Meyer lemon simple syrup:

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 Meyer lemons, juiced and zest
  • removed
    Zest of 2 meyer lemons

For the Meyer lemon simple syrup I combined all of the above ingredients in a 2 quart sauce pan over medium high heat. Allow ingredients to boil while stirring constantly until sugar is melted. Remove from heat and allow to cool. Once cooled it can be stored in the refrigerator.

We’ll be using that simple syrup for a rum concoction this weekend so make sure to keep some of it handy.
